Anthropic folds Claude Cowork into chat in AI superapp push

Anthropic is retiring Claude Cowork as a standalone product and merging its agentic abilities into the main Claude chat interface. 

This change will take effect on Wednesday and will be available to Pro and Max subscribers over the coming weeks. 

Which Anthropic products are being merged? 

Anthropic, as part of its plan to build an AI “superapp” that would be a single interface meant to replace a scatter of separate tools for writing, coding, and file work, is merging its Claude Cowork’s agentic abilities into the main Claude chat interface.

Until now, Claude users had to make a decision between sending a request to the conversational Chat or handing it to Cowork, the more autonomous mode built for longer jobs, every time they opened the app. 

Now, Claude will use context clues, skills, and connectors that a user already has to judge on its own what tool a user’s query should be directed to. 

Alongside the merger, Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides. Claude will now be able to draft slides for a deck which can either be presented straight from the app or downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF. 

Claude Docs lets colleagues edit the same file while Claude writes sections and leaves comments. It will also export to Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

Claude Design, previously its own product, now runs inside any conversation too. 

Meanwhile, OpenAI is also planning to merge ChatGPT, its Codex agent, and potentially its Atlas browser into one product to create its own superapp.

What will the merger cost users?

Anthropic introduced Cowork as a separate app on January 12, 2026, labeling it a research preview, initially limited to Max subscribers on macOS and pitched as Claude Code’s agentic pattern applied to non-technical work. 

WIRED tested it the week it was introduced, using it to sort desktop screenshots into folders and clear out a Gmail inbox. It called Cowork “the first agent that has really clicked.”

Anthropic’s usage numbers showed that most people were not using Cowork for coding. In a sample of 1.2 million sessions between May 11 and May 31, 2026, business process and operations work made up 33.4% of use, and content creation made up 16.4%. 

Software development was only 8.7%. Claude Code — the version built for developers working in terminals and IDEs — is not part of Wednesday’s merger and stays separate.

Anthropic’s merger could result in a raise in the cost of answering even basic queries because agentic tasks that reason through steps and call tools make use of a lot more tokens than a plain chat reply. A Stanford Digital Economy Lab study of coding tasks found that agentic work consumed roughly 1,000 times more tokens than simple chat reasoning. 

Anthropic has defended its product, saying that Claude asks before acting by default, and people can loosen that to let it work and check in only when a decision is needed.
